Gift cards have become a staple for team recognition, employee rewards, and workplace celebrations. Their flexibility, ease of distribution, and universal appeal make them a top choice for managers and HR professionals. But with so many options available, how do you choose the best gift cards for your team? The right choice can make your gesture feel personal and meaningful, while the wrong one can come across as impersonal or inconvenient.

This guide will walk you through the key considerations for selecting the perfect gift cards, best practices for gifting, and how Assembly’s upcoming free-to-signup gift card program can make employee gifting easier and more impactful than ever.

Why Gift Cards Are Great for Teams

Gift cards are popular for several reasons:

  • Flexibility: Employees can choose what they want, ensuring your gift is always appreciated.
  • Convenience: Digital delivery means instant gratification, especially for remote or hybrid teams.
  • Scalability: Whether you’re recognizing one person or an entire department, gift cards fit any budget or team size.
  • Inclusivity: With a wide range of options, you can cater to diverse interests and backgrounds.

Understand Your Team’s Preferences

The most impactful gift cards are those that reflect your team’s unique preferences. Here’s how to get it right:

  • Ask for Input: Use surveys or informal polls to find out what your team values most—retail, dining, experiences, or something else.
  • Consider Demographics: Age, location, and lifestyle can influence preferences. For example, a coffee shop card might be perfect for some, while others prefer online retailers.
  • Respect Diversity: Be mindful of dietary restrictions, cultural backgrounds, and personal beliefs. Avoid cards that may not be universally usable or appreciated.

Key Factors When Choosing Gift Cards

Selecting the right gift card involves more than picking a popular brand. Consider these factors:

1. Personalization

Choose cards that align with your team’s interests. Assembly’s platform will allow you to send money that can be used across a whole catalog, within specific categories (like “Thank You” or “Birthday”), or for curated rewards.

2. Usability

Opt for cards that are easy to redeem, whether online or in-store. Assembly’s digital delivery via text or email ensures everyone can access their gift instantly.

3. Denomination

Match the value of the card to the occasion and your budget. Even small amounts can feel meaningful when paired with a thoughtful message.

4. Expiration and Fees

Check for hidden fees or expiration dates. Assembly’s platform is transparent, so you can gift with confidence.

5. Company Policy

Ensure your gifting aligns with company policies and tax regulations.

6. Digital vs. Physical

Digital cards are ideal for remote teams and instant delivery. Assembly’s e-cards can be customized and sent via email or text, complete with delightful animations.

Types of Gift Cards to Consider

  • Universal Cards: Visa, Mastercard, or Amazon for maximum flexibility.
  • Retailers: Target, Walmart, Best Buy, or Starbucks for everyday convenience.
  • Experiences: Restaurants, entertainment, or streaming services.
  • Charitable Giving: Donation cards for socially conscious teams.
  • Local Businesses: Support your community and offer unique options.

With Assembly, you can send money for specific rewards, choose from curated catalogs, or even send swag (for an additional cost).

Best Practices for Gifting Gift Cards

  • Add a Personal Touch: Pair your gift with a personalized note or a kudo board. Assembly’s e-card feature lets you create a digital card that others can sign, making the moment even more special.
  • Time It Right: Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, or project milestones.
  • Offer Choice: Let recipients pick from a range of options, increasing the likelihood they’ll love their gift.
  • Track and Manage: For larger teams, use Assembly’s automated gifting (contact sales) to streamline the process.
  • Encourage Gratitude: Assembly’s platform allows recipients to send a thank you back, closing the recognition loop.

Avoid Common Gifting Mistakes

  • Don’t Assume: Avoid one-size-fits-all cards. Personalization matters.
  • Watch for Restrictions: Make sure cards are usable in your team’s location and don’t have hidden fees.
  • Don’t Skip the Message: A thoughtful note makes any gift more meaningful.
  • Stay Inclusive: Offer options that work for everyone, regardless of background or lifestyle.

Yes, at Assembly, security is a top priority. Each quarter, we have ongoing security work that is everyone’s responsibility. At the time of redemption (when your employees exchange their points for a paid reward) you'll pay face value. If a reward is a $10 Amazon gift card, your cost will be $10. All paid rewards are billed for on a monthly basis.

Great question! You can customize your core values to match your organization's to boost and track alignment. You can change your currency from the 🏆 emoji (our default) to any emoji of your choice. You can swap our logo for your own. You can also set up company culture rewards such as, "Lunch with the CEO," "Buy a book on us," and so much more!

Who can give or receive recognition?

While we recommend a peer to peer set up where anyone in your organization can give or receive recognition, you can set up Assembly however you want. If you need to limit the people who can give or receive recognition, that's perfectly fine and can be done from your Admin, here.

What integrations are available?

Assembly connects to the tools your employees use every day to offer an easy, seamless experience with minimal change management.

Assembly has integrations with HCM/HRIS systems like ADP, Google, Office 365, and Slack. We also integrate with communication tools like Slack and Teams so you and your employees can access Assembly wherever they work now.

What's your average adoption rate?

That depends on the company's permissions set up. That said, over 90% of the employees on Assembly's platform are recognized on a monthly basis. That means nearly every employee across all of our customers are receiving regular recognition from their peers, managers, or leadership. We're extremely proud of this.

Must rewards be set up to use Assembly?

They are not required. You can use Assembly without having rewards set up. However, we don't recommend it if you intend to have a high adoption and usage rate. You can always keep the costs down by offering internal culture rewards that are fulfilled by you internally.

Are points required to use Assembly?

No, you can remove allowances from anyone or everyone. It's up to you but we do recommend using points whether they're worth a real dollar value or not. Companies that use points have a much higher engagement rate even if those points don't exchange for real dollars.
